Aid to Haiti: “FONDAM” – The Dallas Monnin Foundation

The Monnin family has played an integral part in Haitian culture since 1947.  Through Galerie Monnin, Haiti’s most prominent gallery, the family has introduced Haitian artists to the international art market with great success.  In 2002, the family established The Dallas Monnin Foundation (“FONDAM”) in honor of the Monnin family’s late daughter, Dallas. It was declared a public interest foundation by the Haitian government in 2004.  The philosophy of the FONDAM (http://www.fondam-haiti.org/aboutus.html) is to protect the environment through reforestation, to conserve the watershed areas and to conduct civic education classes for children in the Port Salut area of Haiti.  Since the tragic earthquake, the Foundation has also engaged in direct aid to Haitian artists and their families who suffered greatly.  Here is a link to the artists FONDAM is helping.

100% of your contribution to Green Cities Fund will be transmitted to Fondam.  US dollar checks should be made payable to “Green Cities Fund – Fondam”  and mailed to:

Other ongoing activities of the Foundation are described below:

REFORESTATION
As of 2009 we have planted more than 500,000 trees near the spring and watershed areas with an average success rate of 45% over these past few years.  The percentage of failure is not only caused by grazing goats and sheep but also the lack of enforcement of the rural laws by the local authorities.  FONDAM also  pressures the authorities to act responsibly towards the environment.  The foundation has purchased 30 acres of totally devastated land and has leased for a period of 5-10 years 35 acres for rehabilitation.  The main nursery is in Felix and there are 3 smaller nurseries in the surrounding area.

CIVIC EDUCATION
To achieve a real change in the mind of the population, to fight against the degradation of the environment and to help the local communities achieve a higher standard of living FONDAM  invests in the youth of Haiti.  In April 2006, FONDAM organized ecological courses in all the elementary schools and the 100 prize winners received one year scholarships.
In the 2007 school year FONDAM financed classes in civic education starting with 4th grade children between the ages of 9 and 12 years old.

CULTURE AND PRIDE
In April of 2005, the first spring Land and Sea Festival was held  and prizes awarded to the owners of the most beautiful and well kept animals of the district. The goal was an effort to change how the farmers are perceived as they are very often looked down upon in Haiti.
In 2007, we started a contest called Artists in Our Neighborhood which included dance, poetry, theater and song based on environmental protection and civic-mindedness.   The winners receive scholarships for their tuition.
In June of 2009, we organized a planting day for the school children on World Environment Day in 4 different eroded areas.  When the 300 children finished planting we served them a hot meal and gave them 2 fruit trees to plant at home.
If our contributions increase we hope to enlarge  this program to include every primary class of all the elementary schools up to and through the 7th grade.

We hope you will participate in this endeavor and help us to achieve the renaissance Haiti so badly needs.

SAVE THE MOUNTAINS TO SAVE OURSELVES
